In spite of a modern tendency for television personalities to create gardens with few or no plants, there is no doubt in most people’s mind that without plants a garden is simply not a garden. There is something about the presence of plants, their color, shape and fragrance that lifts the spirits in a very special way. Annuals, perennials and bulbs are the most popular types of flowering plants, offering a vast selection of ways to add that vital color and stimulus to every kind of garden.
Plants give pleasure to people in many different ways. The majority of gardeners enjoy filling space with color, shape and texture as well as planning a garden to make the most of their chosen plants’ strong points. There are others for whom it is the plant itself that is of principal interest. They are less interested in how the plant firs into the overall picture of the garden, or indeed how the garden looks as a whole, and are more absorbed by growing a particular type of plant to absolute perfection.
These gardeners may only grow plants in order to show them, or simply because they enjoy the challenge rare and difficult types. There are others still who garden simply because they enjoy working in the open air and get a real joy from cultivation. For them it is the process as well as the results that matter. The huge variety of annuals, perennials and bulbs that is available, and the many ways in which they can be grown, can easily cater to all these different approaches.
Tackling a large bare patch may seem a rather daunting task to somebody who has not done any gardening before, but it is nothing like as difficult as some experts would have you believe. Gardening is rather like decorating a room, naturally a certain amount of time and effort is involved, but if you are not satisfied with the result you can always change it. This is particularly true with annual plants as they give you the opportunity to start from scratch each year.
How to Plant Bulbs in the Garden
There are two main reasons for buying bulbs; autumn and late winter. Spring flowering bulbs and corms, such as daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and crocuses, should be planted in autumn.
These are all hardy plants and can withstand winter frosts. In late winter summer flowering bulbs, corms, tubers and rhizomes of plants such as crinum, gladioli and begonias are available.
These are not necessarily hardy and are best planted outside in spring. Indeed, begonias are half hardy and thrive only in warm summer conditions. The tubers are brought into growth indoors and moved outside only after all risk of frost has passed.
Dahlia tubers are usually treated in a similar way, although in less frost prone area they can be planted deeper than normal, with the eye bud 10-15 cm deep, then left as a permanent planting with a thick mulch in winter.
Most bulbs, corms, tubers and rhizomes have a rounded bottom or base from which the old roots grow, and these are sometimes still attached to the bulb. They may also have a pointed or tapering nose at the top, from which the first shoots emerge.
The general rule for planting is that the rounded base sits on the soil while the nose points upwards. The planting depth is normally determined by the size of the bulb, and the general rule is that a bulb should be planted at a depth of three times its own size.
Thus, if a bulb measures 5cm or 2in from nose to base, there should be 15cm of soil on top of it. This means that the hole required for planting is actually 20cm deep.
Many beginners are worries about combining colors, but the key is simply to go for plants and effects that you like without worrying about what other people do. Remember that we all have some ability were color is concerned, we choose what goes with what when we get dressed each day and we choose colors for decorating and furnishing our homes.
Planning a garden is really no different. In the same way that there are fashion magazines to help you choose your style, so there is no shortage of different kinds of gardening magazines to browse through for inspiration, and there is nothing more enjoyable than wandering around other people’s gardens in search of good ideas.
There is also no need to worry about gardening techniques. Most gardening is common sense and if you do make a mistake, just remember that you can always put it right next year, or even the year after. Having said that, there are, of course, basic sensible and effective practices that have developed over many generations, and all of these are clearly described.
