The Scotch Heather Amethyst, Calluna vulgaris 'Amethyst', is a bud bloomer with purplish crimson buds from August to January. It has dark green foliage and an small upright bushy habit low growing perennial evergreen ground cover or low shrub for sun blooms during late summer. Amethyst has buds which are bluer than 'Alexandra' but last longer. The persistent flower buds add great interest in fall and winter. Prune by cutting branches below the flowers in fall or in early spring in colder zones. It requires full sun and acid loving fertile well drained soil that is humus rich. Amethyst is a budbloomer which means that it is a form of Calluna in which the flowers never develop beyond the bud stage, but as a result, keep their color for a long period. Amethyst is one of the longest lasting displays of the series.
