Lamium Purple Dragon, Lamium maculatum 'Purple Dragon' PP15,890, is a newer selection which produces large deep purple snapdragon like flowers. The flowers are arranged in large dense terminal spikes that jump right out of their bright silvery foliage. Lamium 'Purple Dragon' proves to be a very attractive ground cover. It is considered to be more drought tolerant than other lamiums which offers the gardener more choices when selecting a growing site. Absolutely the heaviest flowering lamium we have ever seen! Lamium prefers a semi shady dry area with well drained soil, but will tolerate a wide range of soils and moisture. It is best to cut this plant back after the first bloom to promote compact growth. Plant in a well drained soil and do not allow it to dry out. Use lamium in hanging baskets, in mixed containers, trailing over walls or as an edger, but spread must be controlled. ‘Purple Dragon’ looks great among hostas, ferns, lungworts bulbs and wildflowers. It nicely disguises dying bulb foliage and makes an excellent weed smothering ground cover.
