Katherine Havemeyer Lilac, Syringa vulgaris 'Katherine Havemeyer', is an early blooming French Hybrid that produces abundant clusters of double, lavender pink, fragrant flowers among dark green, disease resistant foliage. It is a leggy, suckering, deciduous shrub, somewhat irregular in shape. It is a strong, long lived, popular shrub that is easily grown in a neutral soil, with peat or leaf mold enrichment, and it prefers full sun. Katherine Havemeyer Lilac tolerates light shade, but best bloom is in full sun. It grows 10 12 feet tall and 8 10 feet wide which makes a very colorful border or screen. Very well branched head with lots of fragrant blooms, this pretty, spreading lilac makes an excellent backdrop for a shrub border. Mulch this hardy lilac each year in early spring and avoid pruning young plants, except to remove unproductive or diseased wood.
