Arborvitae Smaragd, Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd', is a semi dwarf, evergreen shrub with a compact, narrowly pyramidal habit. It bears glossy bright green, scale like foliage in flat sprays. The urn shaped cones are 12 long and mature in autumn to reddish brown. The Smaragd tends to taper from top to bottom, you can expect it to get 12 to 15 feet tall, and its width at the base is about 3 feet. Easily grown in average, medium, well drained soil in full sun to part shade. Foliage density loosens up in too much shade. It tolerates a wide range of soils and likes humid weather with regular rains. In hot and dry weather, periodic, deep waterings are advisable. Smaragd makes a good specimen, hedge, background plant, or foundation plant.
