Clematis Blue, Clematis macropetala 'Blue', blooms early in the season from April through May and is followed with attractive silky seed heads. The lavender blue nodding flowers are very free flowering and absolutely beautiful! A very hardy cultivar that grows well in partial shade or sun and can also be used as a ground cover. Clematis macropetala 'Blue' needs to be pruned lightly above the new leaf buds in early spring and have dead or weak stems removed. Varieties within this group flower on the new season's growth. Besides planting them in a location which provides sunlight and maintains a cool root system, Clematis requires something for them to climb on or to twine around. Applying mulches in the spring will help keep the root system shaded and cool. The soil should be kept moist but not wet.
