Clematis Freckles Fern Leafed Clematis, 'Clematis Freckles', is an unusual clematis with pendulous, bell shaped, cream flowers with red blotches. This aggressive grower blooms from late winter to early spring with 2 flowers that dangle from long stems. The attractive finely cut foliage may turn bronze in the winter. Prune lightly after spring flowering only. Hardy to zone 6 winter protection recommended. Clematis 'Freckles' needs a supporting structure to grow properly. Clematis is easy to grow in a rich, porous, alkaline soil with plenty of room for the roots to spread. Best performance is when the tops are in full sunlight and the roots are shaded, so apply a generous mulch or a shallow rooted ground cover near the base of the vine. Very reliable performers once established they take a season or two.
