The Sutherland Gold Elderberry, Sambucus racemosa 'Sutherland Gold', is an adaptable shrub, swift and vigorous in its growth. 'Sutherland Gold' can tolerate a great deal of sun and is frequently claimed to be more sun tolerant than 'Plumusa Aurea'. It may not bloom and fruit as fully in the deepest shade, so bright shade or dappled shade is the ideal. New spring leaves emerge golden with coppery highlights and sheen in late March , soon mature to a rich golden yellow, and then very slowly turn lime green in summer. The leaves are deeply cut, to the point that it has been described as looking like a gigantic fern. This elderberry is suitable for mixed or shrub borders or for naturalizing in wild areas. The fruits of this genus have culinary attributes when cooked, but can cause illness if eaten raw, or if the poisonous seeds are consumed. The Sutherland Gold Elderberry shrub prefers humus rich moist well draining soil, but can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions and is drought hardy when well established.
