Elderberry Variegated

The Variegated Elderberry, Sambucus nigra 'Marginata', is similar to the species, except that the leaves have broad golden yellow margins at first, later paling to white yellow. It has lacy, variegated, white edge foliage and tasty berries. Elderberries start to bear when 2 or 3 years of age. Allow fruit to ripen on the plant before picking. When the berries are ripe in September, they are good out of hand or use in preparing elderberry wine, jams and jelly. This hardy shrub is at ease in a woodland landscape or in the back of the border. Variegation is a cream color against a dark green background. Plant in sun or partial shade with at least 6 hours of sun per day. Variegated is not fussy about soil type and is adapted to most of the United States. Variegated Elderberry makes a great informal deciduous hedge or accent plant.
